The Problem

There is a noticeable shortage of animated stories based on African folk tales. This scarcity means that the rich tapestry of African cultures, traditions, and wisdom is not being adequately represented in the world of animation. Especially concerning are the limited options available for children to learn about the diverse cultures and life lessons embedded in African folk tales. This gap restricts children's exposure to the depth and variety of African heritage, hindering the global understanding of this vibrant continent.

The Brief

The brief is to bring an African folk tale to life through animation. Characters need depth - they should feel like real people, with emotions and a background. My goal is to blend technical skills with emotions, making the characters connect with the audience.

The Solution

The animation created centers around the traditional Zulu folk tale The Cheetah and The Lazy Hunter. In this story, Unkwevu, a lazy hunter, ventures to capture and train Dianna’s cub, aiming to break free from the conventions of the Zulu tribe, which emphasize strength and skill in hunting. Unkwevu's ambition lies in transforming the cub into a skilled hunter despite facing the challenges posed by Dianna, the protective cheetah mother, and the stern leader of his tribe. The narrative explores the clash between tradition and innovation.

Intended Audience

The animated adaptation of The Cheetah and The Lazy Hunter. was created with young audiences in South Africa in mind. Specifically tailored for children, the animation serves as an engaging and educational tool, imparting essential values and morals through the captivating narrative.
